Decorating Your Home for Fall - Less is More

As home builders, we love seeing a home come to life through the seasons. Fall is one of the best times to embrace that cozy, welcoming feeling. But, fall decor can easily become overdone and cluttered.

Here’s how to create that autumn charm without overdoing it!

1. Don’t Get Too “Trinket-y”

Instead of loading up on “pumpkin everything,” think about replacing other items in your home with the “fall version”. Swap out lightweight summer fabrics for cozy materials like knits, wools, and other heavier blends. A chunky throw blanket, a few textured pillows, or a woven basket can make your space feel like fall without overdoing the “Halloween” decor.

2. Choose a Refined Color Palette

Fall colors don’t have to mean all bright orange and deep red. Try a neutral fall palette: rust, olive, cream, soft amber, and warm taupe. These colors add a seasonal feel but won’t clash with your current decor. Then add in just a few neutral pumpkins or leaf themed decor in small spaces. You can add a fall wreath to the front door and a jack-o’-lantern to the stoop that can be easily removed at the end of the month for a more neutral November.

3. Focus on Key Areas

You don’t have to decorate every corner. Choose a few focal points to highlight the season…like your entryway, mantle, or dining table. A seasonal centerpiece, a soft candle arrangement, or a simple wreath can go a long way!

4. Layer with Warm Lighting

Nothing says fall like warm lighting. Use softly lit lamps, candlelight, or dimmed sconces to create that cozy ambiance. Think about maybe even adding amber bulbs or candles with more subtle seasonal scents like cedar, cinnamon or vanilla instead of overpowering with pumpkin spice in every room.

5. Keep It Transitional

The best fall décor transitions easily from October to November and into winter. Think neutral pieces that don’t scream “Halloween” but still feel like fall vibes! When Thanksgiving passes, you can simply add greenery or swap a few of the orangey tones with your reds and greens!

Being a bit more thoughtful in your seasonal decor will make your home feel beautifully autumn-like…without sacrificing its clean, sophisticated style.
